What if Every Campaign Speech Was Like This One?

  1. If all speeches were like that, then people would be less likely to fall asleep. It reminds me of the youtube video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDVTHbvcwGs It might actually make people pay attention more to the speeches themselves instead of the "character" of the president.

  2. I think this guy is seriously confused and lost. I mean, he sounded like he is very dedicated to politics. I liked his handmotions for "tool," "weapon," and "snap." He sounded like a minister. He just needs to take a breather. Did he win?

  3. This type of campaign speech would be very ineffective in my opinion. First of all, the man looks emotionally unstable. The tone of the voice was totally unnecessary. He won't be able to convince anyone with that kind of attitude. His word choices were also too vulgar. "Instead of using it as a tool, I will use it as a weapon," and "I will load both pairs of guns" just makes the audience think he's a violent, intolerant person. Honestly, I thought campaign was kind of like babying the people to vote for that particular person. So, when someone is threatening to use the power bestowed upon them ,by winning the election, as a "weapon", I don't think the voters will be very moved by their speech.

  4. Too many jokes, not enough space.
If every campaign speech was like this, the American people would wonder what they did to deserve such wrath. And whether or not that faint ringing sound in their ears is a sign of hearing loss. I suppose, in a slightly cynical, funny way, this represents an American ideal: that anybody can run for government. Which, as exemplified, can not only be a just principle, but also ridiculously hilarious. This guy needs to team up with Basil Marceaux.
The entertaining factor I could get over(ex: someone please point this guy to the restroom; he is clearly doing thpotty dance). I think we can all agree the delivery here could use some work. But it would almost make him seem like a "common man" of sorts, IF he were actually saying anything about what's going on in the Stark County Treasury Department, people may agree with him. However, all I know after seeing his speech is that it's corrupt and politics is somehow like football.

  5. I am...flabbergasted. This man is insane!!! He reminds me of Kevin from the office on speed! To answer your question, if every campaign speech was like this, I would have to move. I don't really understand the point of this video, I don't believe someone like this would ever get elected to office...its pretty pointless to waste our time on people like him, I just lost 7 min. of my life which I will never get back, I mean what is the point?

  6. Wow that speech was epic. Honestly I would be a little scared if this guy won the nomination as treasurer. His speech was so violent especially the part when he used the analogy of knowledge as a weapon. Although his speech was a little intense, he makes some valid points like “politics is winner takes all.” My favorite line of the speech was definitely, "I have been a republican in times good and I have been a republican in times bad!"

  7. Woah. That was intense (or "in tents" cause he was camping right?)!!! I don't who in their right mind would make that crazy of a speech! At 2:50... "Drastic times call for what?... YES! DRASTIC MEASURES! WHO SAID THAT!?" That was the best part!

On a more serious note, I believe that if we had more Americans this into politics or maybe a slightly less intense level we would be able to accomplish a lot more. Now on the other hand if we had multiple people like this guy in our government we might have the "too many cooks in the kitchen" situation which could even be a current problem in our government, but regardless if people in America were more involved in politics even voted more often the country would resemble more of what our founding fathers pictured and worked so hard to obtain. With this being said, this video correlates directly about what we were talking about in class on Friday.

  8. This honestly made me uncomfortable. I don't think that it makes much sense for him to be freaking out about this. It just seems like he's anxious, not enthralled about the cause, you know? As if the Star county treasurer is diffusing bombs daily? It just leaves me feeling anxious too. I can appreciate the fact that he's attempting to come off as unwavering, and maybe that's his point? It definitely raises attention. Maybe he's acting so ardent because he wants to get his name out, almost like a scheme? Well, nonetheless, I stand by my gut reaction, discomfort, ha. But congrats to him for standing out.

  9. I wonder how many campaigns like this were seen before the media started publicizing political campaigns and debates. The media has definitely affected politics since then. A good example would be the Kennedy-Nixon debates when Kennedy beat Nixon in the image department. Candidates are probably judged a lot by the impression they give to their audience.

Phil Davison is loud, frantic, doesn't seem to know what he wants to say to us since he has to keep referring back to his notecard, overdramatic, and he overall doesn't seem like an organized, put-together man, much less a political candidate. Basically, I don't know if I could stand watching campaign speeches if they were all like this one.

But then again, it's not about liking the person, it's about their beliefs and what they plan on doing. I think that's one of the flaws in voting. People vote based off of which candidate they like better or, looks better, in the case of the '08 elections, which race people prefer -- a criteria that I definitely do not support. The media ruins all.

  10. I think it's hilarious how someone so diligent and so emotional in their idea can't seem to remember what he's going to say next for more than five seconds. It seems like every half a sentence he has to look down to figure out what he's saying next. I'm not exactly sure what kind of technique he's trying to push across by yelling so much during his campaign, but to me it's completely destroyed by the fact that he keeps looking down.

  11. This guy is clearly excited to be up there, but not in a good way. And his "masters degree" in communications needs some work if he cant even get through one sentance without going over to his speech and taking a nice long glance at it. If every campaign were like this America would be undoubtedly the laughingstock of the democratic world. If our politicians couldnt focus enough to remember any length of speech and talk in a reasonable voice to their nominating party. In addition the pre-pubecent voice cracks only further the humiliation we should feel for calling him a politician. Just because everyone has the right to run for office certainly doesnt mean everyone should, and he definitely shouldnt

  12. Wait.. this is a joke? There is no way this guy has a masters in communication. If every campaign speech were like this one, the government would be full of blockheads (more so than now). Emotion is a praiseworthy attribute in delivering messages to a group of people, but this fellow memorizes a sentence; delivers it with his harshly abrasive voice; and then becomes silent to further study the next section. Such a method is not emotion, it's a pure act. Even the audience is laughing. Moreover, when one is passionate about a subject, the most effective strategy is to build up to the most important central idea. However, Davison maintains his startling yell the entire time. Maybe this is how he talks when he's nervous, considering the amount of mistakes he made during is "speech." And perhaps if he had made an effort to apologize for his "tone," he wouldn't have become a one-hit youtube sensation/

  13. This speech was way too dramatic. Davison continuously has to catch his breath and has to check his speech over and over again. The way he gave his speech, overemphasizing every single point ruins his speech. It shifts the audience's focus away from the details of the speech and the content davidson wants the audience to hear towards the way the speech was delivered, loud and unnecessary. This clip is a nice depiction of how America is starting to look towards candidates when it comes to who they vote for. They base their vote on how the speech was delivered, what the candidate looked like, not on the content of their speech, what ideals they presented. If this trend continues, American elections will shift to more of a popularity contest rather than a judge of who will best improve our nation.

  14. This video was kind of hilarious, but what most interests me is the fact that its kind of a hyperbolic representation of what politics is actually like. I mean, most people vote with their emotions more than their minds. Any political argument that occurs because of differences of opinions is usually a result of some emotional connection or another. Even politicians get emotionally involved, although they may not be as obvious as Mr. Davidson.

However, the main difference between most campaigns and his is the fact that it was almost too passionate for logic to have any say. Granted, emotions spark interest, but there at least has to be some illusion of the "calm and collected" politician to gain trust. The average person may get into a heated argument about political beliefs, but the leader of his/her party needs to be the more stable of the two. Mr Davidson's campaign is too emotional, and voters might not be able to rely on his ability to get anything done, for fear that he'll just spend his time ranting instead.

  15. Oh goodnes! This guy is surely something else. He sure took the definition of aggressive to its fullest. I could not decide whether he was about to kill someone or break down crying! I think that guy needs some help for sure!

  16. If every campaign speech was like this one, I wouldn't be able to take any one of them seriously. I was laughing the whole time while watching him. You can tell he wasn't very prepared. he didn't know what he was going to say next and pretty looked like he wrote down everything word for word on his paper. He also paced around so much and yelled at his audience, showing his nervousness. I would be pretty disappointed if he was elected too because he does not look like he can give speeches nor does he know his stuff. And who wants a person who yells at you in a speech?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Wow. That was comedic gold. However, how effective was it politically? Sure, an audience needs something to grab their attention. But I'm unconvinced that was the way to go about it. I know I was distracted and it was difficult for me to focus on his policies and I'm sure it was for all those in attendance there as well. On the other hand, many voters base their votes off of personality and other non-issue related factors. And in the respect, he definitely has my vote.

  18. Another thing... a masters degree in communication?

  20. You know, in today's world of political leaders constanly being mocked for something they said in a speech, political speeches like this would serve to say "Hey public, go ahead and make fun of me. That just means that your retaining my message. Also, I'm scary and possibly insane (like most people)"

  21. Thanks, Nimmy. His interview is worth checking out.
